What would we do without donut shops?

What would we do without donut shops?

Would there be time for family breakfasts?

The aroma of fried eggs and bacon,

Sizzling!

Would there be time for discussion?

Meaningful exchanges of conversation,

Nurturing!

What would we do without donut shops?

Unlimited refreshment of scalding black liquid.

The aroma of beans, dried, pressed and flavoured,

Scintillating!

Will people stop long enough to listen,

To each other?

Understanding!

The donut shop is only a thoroughfare,

Passing!

People pass, catered for, appeased!

How satisfying their favourite blend,

Or how filling the rich array of donut,

Muffin or tea biscuit.

Appealing!

What would we do without donut shops?

A convenience substituted for reality!

There are no kids there, no wives;

There are new identities!

Secretaries, clerks, managers and executives,

Pass by, pass through, pass each other.

Tradesmen, technicians, labourers and foremen,

Mingle!

Coffee: Black, regular, double-double;

Croissants, cruller, honey glazed.

An array of good tasting goodies;

Tempting!

What would we do without donut shops?

Corner lots would be vacant;

Newspaper boxes wouldn't empty!

Friends wouldn't meet and friendships begin,

Or finish with memories!

We would not do without!
