The Witness of a Soldier at the Foot of The Cross

As I knelt before that cross,

I felt the blood upon my cheek;

The wave washed over my simple self;

The shackles of my soul fell off,

Freedom the gift I received!

As I knelt before that cross,

My sword clasped tight within my grasp;

Worldly duties their place avowed,

My scabbard now locked, to be undrawn,

Forgiveness to be imparted by those I touch.

As I knelt before your cross,

The words of meaning simply spoken,

Flowed in cleansing motion o'er all.

My eyes now opened, my tongue untied,

My duty pledged to live your vow!

As I knelt before your cross,

My inner being soared, released!

Calmness vibrant within resounds,

Peace reverberates to overflow;

Joy evokes fulfilment of grace.

As I knelt before that cross,

Heaven and earth communed.

An angelic host in voice spoke out,

Praising the coming redemption of the world;

My soul in chorus sang aloud!

As I knelt before your cross,

I heard the call from afar.

A myriad voices echoing,

From bondage and darkness drowned,

Raised upward in triumph bound.

As I knelt before that cross,

The hammer rang a striking chord.

Each nail a piercing cry rang out,

The pain of earthly life resound,

The cold of steel tightly clasped.

As I knelt before your cross,

Passion mingled beneath my breast.

The prize, the result of earthly quest,

To join the journey's endless path,

To fulfil that call to spiritual health.

As I walk before your cross,

Your footsteps lead and guide.

My burden lightened and forgiven;

Your grace bids the unbidden,

My part simple and undriven.

As I walk, you carry your cross!

The world no longer my prison;

Righteousness extends and is freely given.

Love flows through your life;

Release! Renewal! Final leadership overcomes all strife!
