Servant or Slave?
I would speak to You!
Of slaves and servants;
Both concern the use of labour,
Of skills and talents;
One is voluntary, the other forced.
The individual may choose,
Or may be chosen having no choice!
Look upon the faces of people who pass!
Will you find peace and tranquillity?
Are the eyes drawn, the face a form of grimace?
The young and the old rush by;
Rarely stopping to enjoy a moment of solitude!
The priority of life, the mundane, daily flies;
The question always asked, "Why?"
Children run and play where they may;
Freedom only valid when the parent gives way.
Is there time taken to enjoy growth,
Is encouragement given to develop youth?
Who will they learn from?
Will there be an appreciation for tomorrow?
Life must promise and deliver progress, hope and value!
The labourer seeks an evaluation of his skill;
Will his best be given if the rewards are unknown?
Do your best! A worthwhile philosophical statement.
Passive acceptance of poor standards offer nothing;
Whether the activity is major or minor,
Success will demand that ownership be your own!
Identity recognised will provide a better return.
Will the militant set standards; to correct
Exploitation by other uncontrolled force?
Who is entitled to the profit,
Developed on the creation of another?
Michelangelo created, through his skill,
Extended a thought and established a masterpiece;
The Master's work completed by a servant!
Who will look toward the day and take comfort?
Look toward the past satisfied, and envisage the future?
Will today's servant remain the servant,
Or will a slave be held as a captive?
There is a choice, in fact there are many;
Where the few chosen may choose
To offer and impart a worthy choice!
